在無菌和人工控制的環境條件下,利用適當的培養基,對離體的植物器官、組織、細胞及原生質體進行培養使其再生細胞或完整植株的技術。其使用的試劑包括組織培養基、植物凝膠、生長調節劑、抗生素/抗性篩選試劑等。
例如獨腳金內酯是一種植物激素或其前體,能夠抑制植物的分枝和側芽的生長。rac-GR24是以獨角金內酯為框架,人工合成的最為有效的化學類似物可調控植物分枝、分葉;誘發寄生植物種子的萌發;促進叢枝菌根真菌分枝。植物組織培養可大大縮短育種時間,提高育種效率。利用原生質體融合能夠一定程度上克服遠緣雜交不親和性,從而獲得體細胞雜種,培育優良品種,因此廣泛應用于植物科研:如模式植物,作物育種等領域。
